Screenshot Sidekick for Mac

Your screenshots. Right here.

Keep screenshots visible on your desktop with an animated refrigerator, corkboard, clothesline, deli ticket rail or telephone pole. Requires macOS 14 or later.

Catch new screenshots

Open Screenshot Sidekick. It automatically finds the current macOS screenshot destination and watches for new screenshots. If macOS denies access, click Allow Access for the folder already shown. You do not need to move your screenshots or change their destination.

Use Shift–Command–3 for the whole screen, Shift–Command–4 for an area, Shift–Command–4 then Space for a window, or Shift–Command–5 for capture controls. Mac Capture opens Apple’s capture controls. Choose a still-image mode such as Capture Selected Portion; video recordings do not appear on the holder. Clipboard-only captures do not save a file and cannot appear on the holder. For immediate arrival, choose Timer: None and turn off Show Floating Thumbnail in macOS Screenshot Options.

Preview, rename and edit

Hover over a card for a large preview. Click the preview picture or the card to open the screenshot with its saved date and time, editable filename and all editing tools visible. Fit shows the whole image; 100% displays one image pixel per display point, with zoom controls for details. Opening another screenshot replaces the existing editing window; edits are saved automatically. Open in Preview sends the image to Apple Preview for quick editing.

Select Arrow, Text or Circle and drag on the image. Each tool stays active for repeated drawing. Draw a rectangle for text, then type; double-click existing text to edit it. Click an existing arrow, text box or circle outline to select just that mark. Drag it to move, or use its handles to resize. Your chosen drawing tool stays active so you can draw more on empty space. Choose ink color, Any Color, text size and line thickness in the controls above the image. Hide Details adds opaque covers. Undo, Redo and Reset Edits let you change your work.

Crop keeps the selected rectangle in the edited view. Your original stays unchanged. Save Copy creates a separate file containing your crop and edits. Copy Image, Open in Preview, Share and dragging edited images also include the saved edits and covers.

Copy words or pictures

Copy Text recognizes words on your Mac and enters selection mode. Click a word or drag across several, then click Copy Selection or press Command–C to copy only the highlighted words. Copy Image copies the edited picture and briefly says Ready to Paste; use Command–V in the receiving app.

Move to Library or Trash

Drag a card into another app. A successful drop turns it gray while keeping it pinned. A canceled drop keeps it new. Move to Library is available in the hover preview and editing window. It removes the card from its holder while keeping the original file and edits accessible in Screenshot Library under In Library. Show on Holder brings it back. This is not an independent backup: moving or deleting the original file outside the watched folder also removes it from Library. Trash moves the original file into recoverable Mac Trash. In the opened image, Trash is separate at the upper-right.

Make the holder yours

Drag the artwork to move it. Drag an artwork corner to resize it. Holders grow as screenshots arrive and use pages when needed. With Auto-grow on, Clothesline and Deli Ticket Rail expand to six images per row, then two or three rows, up to 18 per page. With Auto-grow off, they show three per page. Settings offers all five holders, animation, floating above windows, used-card visibility, Dock and login choices. macOS Reduce Motion is supported.

The app menu contains Screenshot Library, Settings and Quit, with page and Move Used to Library actions when applicable. Click the Dock icon to reopen the holder. Screenshot Library includes importing existing images, selection, sharing and search. Image-text search runs locally when you enter a search.

A screenshot is missing

Settings shows the app version and the full Watching folder path. Use Open Folder to open that same destination in Finder. A capture saved only to the clipboard or opened directly in Preview may not produce a watched file. Check the All, New, Used and In Library filters in Screenshot Library. If an external drive is unavailable, Screenshot Sidekick reconnects when it returns.
